Documentation Centre
Troubleshooting
Advice on some of the challenges you may find when accessing SIMS user documentation from the Documentation Centre. If the solutions suggested do not resolve your particular issue, please Contact us via the link at the bottom of this page. We will work closely with you to resolve any issues.
The SIMS Documentation Centre has not updated in line with SIMS upgrade and the front page is still showing content from the previous release.
The part of the SIMS upgrade that deals with the update of the SIMS Documentation Centre (SIMSApplicationSetup.exe) has failed.
This is caused by the incorrect configuration of the SIMS File Server settings in SOLUS3; it is likely that the File Server has been pointed to the network SIMS drive rather than the local SIMS drive. To resolve this issue, please complete the following steps.
I receive a 404 – File or directory not found message when I click a link.
The resource you have attempted to access does not exist.
If you receive this error, please Contact us via the link at the bottom of this page and provide details of the page you are on and the link you are attempting to access. This message indicates a fault in the Documentation Centre.
I have entered http://simspublications.com in the Address Bar of my Web browser and the following message is displayed: If you are having problems accessing the Capita SIMS documentation, please contact the SIMS publications department. Why?
This message is expected behaviour if you enter http://simspublications.com directly into the Address Bar of your Web browser. The precise location of the Documentation Centre beneath simspublications.com changes with each release, indicated by a six-digit number. For the Spring 2015 releases of SIMS, FMS and Discover, this is 413567. This approach enables us to maintain a complete library of user documentation on a per release basis, while controlling access to the new and updated range of documentation for forthcoming releases.
To ensure that you access the Documentation Centre relating to the version of SIMS installed at your establishment, you are strongly advised to access it using one of the following methods:
If you wish to access the Documentation Centre outside of the SIMS, FMS and Discover environment, make a note of the six-digit number in the Address Bar and append this to http://simspublications.com, e.g. http://simspublications.com/413567.
When I click a link, nothing happens. Why?
Please refer to the following section, I use Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. Can I access the Documentation Centre?
I use Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. Can I access the Documentation Centre?
There are a number of known issues regarding the use of the Documentation Centre when it is accessed using Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.
The most prominent issue is that when you click a link to open a resource, nothing happens.
If you use Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox and you encounter problems when using the Documentation Centre, please read the following important notes.
Is Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox your default Web browser? Please note that this is not necessarily the browser that is called when you open the Documentation Centre. Find out your default Web browser by carrying out the following test:
If Google Chrome is your default Web browser, you must disable the Chrome PDF Viewer and enable the Adobe Acrobat plug-in to ensure that PDF files display correctly. This is achieved by entering chrome://plugins in the Address Bar then pressing Enter to display the Plug-ins page. Ensure that the Chrome PDF Viewer item is disabled and the Adobe Reader item is enabled. Close all Web browsers then re-open Documentation Centre and attempt to open the required resource again.
If Mozilla Firefox is your default Web browser, you must tell Firefox to use Adobe Acrobat to display PDF files. This is achieved by clicking the Firefox button then selecting Options | Options to display the Options dialog. Click the Applications tab then scroll down to the Portable Document Format (PDF) option. Select Use Adobe Acrobat (default) from the drop-down list in the Actions column then click the OK button. Close all Web browsers then re-open the Documentation Centre and attempt to open the required resource again.
If the problem persists, please Contact us via the link at the bottom of this page.
How do I change my default Web browser?
I have limited Web access/a slow Internet connection but I still want to access the Documentation Centre. What can I do?
User documentation that supports a release is available from the Documentation Centre. The Documentation Centre is hosted on the Web, enabling us to make any necessary changes mid-release and to make new resources available immediately.
However, we understand that the Internet connection at some establishments is slow or Web access is limited so we have provided some alternative methods to access our range of user documentation.
For each release, we provide a downloadable version of our documentation sets for SIMS, FMS and Discover. The downloadable documentation sets can be fully integrated with your SIMS, FMS and Discover software (and therefore accessed from within the applicable applications) by unzipping each documentation set into the appropriate location on your server/workstation (depending on the documentation set concerned).
Preparing and using the downloadable SIMS documentation set:
Download the local version of the SIMS documentation set that supports the SIMS 2014 Spring Release from the following location:
http://dl.capitasolus.co.uk/Downloads/DocCentre/SIMS-DocCentre-2014-Spring.zip
Once you have downloaded the file, unzip it to the \SIMS\Documentation folder on your SIMS Server. The downloaded documentation set is accessed by clicking the Documentation button on the SIMS Home Page (via Focus | Home Page).
Preparing and using the downloadable FMS documentation set:
Download the local version of the FMS documentation set that supports the FMS 2014 Spring Release from the following location:
http://dl.capitasolus.co.uk/Downloads/DocCentre/FMS-DocCentre-2014-Spring.zip
Once you have downloaded the file, unzip it to the \Program Files\SIMS\FMSSQL folder. The downloaded documentation set is accessed by selecting Help | FMS Documentation in FMS.
Preparing and using the downloadable Discover documentation set:
Download the local version of the Discover documentation set that supports the Discover 2014 Spring Release from the following location:
http://dl.capitasolus.co.uk/Downloads/DocCentre/Discover-DocCentre-2014-Spring.zip
Once you have downloaded the file, unzip it to the Discover Client directory on each workstation, e.g. C:\Program Files\SIMS\Discover Client. The downloaded documentation set is accessed by clicking the Help (?) button in Discover.
If you decide to employ the downloadable documentation set solution in your establishment, please remember that the user documentation provided is correct at the time it is first published and that you will not have access to any resources that have been updated, or to new resources made available mid-release.
When attempting to open a tutorial, I receive the following Adobe Reader error message: Online Help content cannot be displayed. Verify you can launch your web browser and have access to the Internet.
Adobe Reader no longer includes Flash Player, which is required to view our library of video tutorials.
If you receive this error message and wish to view video tutorials, you must navigate to the following web address and download Flash Player:
http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/known-issues-acrobat-xi-reader.html
When accessing the Documentation Centre, I receive the following message at the bottom of my web browser: Internet Explorer restricted this webpage from running scripts or Active X controls.
This message is displayed because your current security settings block ActiveX objects from being run in Internet Explorer.
To benefit fully from the resources available from the Documentation Centre, blocked ActiveX controls must be enabled.
Clicking the Allow blocked content button resolves this issue for this session only.
A permanent solution to this issue is available, but should be carried out only after consulting with your System Manager/Administrator:
The changes come into effect the next time your PC is restarted.
When I open a Quick Reference Sheet (QRS), it opens with both pages side by side, the text is too small and this makes it difficult to read. Why are they displayed like this and how can I change the display?
Our range of QRSs default to display two pages side by side.
We have edited the settings in the QRSs so that you can change the display options. The options available include a zoom facility and to change to a single page view.
With a QRS displayed, you can change the view via the Navigation toolbar (e.g. by selecting the required zoom setting from the drop-down list, by clicking the Fit one full page to window button, etc.).
When I open the Documentation Centre, some of the content is misaligned and overlaps with other content. I am viewing the Documentation Centre online. Why does this happen and how can I fix it?
This is most likely to occur when we upload an updated version of the Documentation Centre and is caused by cache storage on your machine.
If this issue should occur when you access the Documentation Centre, carry out a forced refresh by pressing Ctrl + F5 in your web browser. Refreshing your web browser in this way refreshes the web page by bypassing the local cache.
If this does not resolve the issue, the cache can be cleared manually in your web browser. For more information on this process, please refer to the online help of your web browser.
Current and older versions of the majority of documents available in the Documentation Centre can also be accessed using the search facility on the My Account website.
